Praising God from A to Z - Day 15

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. John 16:33
Life in this world is not always easy. In fact, the Bible makes it clear that even when we become Christians, life doesn’t necessarily get easier. Life can often become more difficult because by declaring our allegiance to God, we also declare our stand against the enemy. When you are walking in the path God has for you, the enemy will work harder to derail you. I often used to think that facing adversity meant I was doing something wrong or that I was being punished for something. Thankfully, I now know that this is simply not true. Now, don’t misunderstand, we absolutely will face consequences for our sinful choices but God isn’t out to get you for every little thing you do wrong. Think of it more as a loving parent who gives a consequence because they know it is how you will learn to make better choices next time. The good news in all of this is that Christ has already overcome the world! We can have peace knowing that trials will not last forever. We already know the rest of the story, and the enemy does not win! Thank God today that he is your overcomer.

Praising God from A to Z - Day 14

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.     Psalm 34:18
God is always near, not just sometimes or when he feels like it. He doesn’t just come around every so often or when we do something he is pleased with. He is ALWAYS near! But I know it doesn’t always feel like that’s true. I went through a season where I wondered if he had actually forgotten about me. I knew that he promised to be near but I was in a place of depression where I did not feel it so I questioned the truth of his nearness for me. You want to know the good news? Even in that time when I did not feel his presence, he was still there. The same is true for you too! Yes, it took me some long hard years to get back to the place where I could feel his presence in my life but just knowing that he did not leave me during that time is a comfort now on the harder days. I can finally look back and see how he was working in me through it all. Take time to thank him today for being near.

Praising God from A to Z - Day 13

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23
Mercy is withholding rightful judgement. The most important picture of God’s mercy is sending his son Jesus to die a painful death on the cross as a punishment for sins he did not commit but to take our punishment upon him so that we could enter into restored relationship with God. His sacrifice became our salvation. So instead of giving us the punishment we deserve, he extends mercy. All we have to do is accept the gift of salvation! Aren’t you glad that God is merciful?!

Praising God from A to Z - Day 12

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:5
God is nothing but light! Just think about that for a minute. There is absolutely no darkness in him. I saw an image recently of a lit candle casting a shadow on a wall, except the flame cast no shadow just like God, who is light, casts no darkness. When you accept Christ as your Saviour, you are delivered from the domain of darkness (Colossians 1:13). Darkness no longer has power over you! If you are living in a dark place today, hold tight to God who is your source of light. He wants to rescue you from that darkness. Give thanks today for God is light!

Praising God from A to Z - Day 11

Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.  Psalm 63:3
Aren’t you glad our God is kind? He isn’t some supreme being that is always ready to punish you or point out every little thing you do wrong. He is a loving and kind God who desires for a relationship with you. In his kindness, he does not leave his children behind. I am so thankful that God did not forget about me during the periods of my life when it was hard to seek him. He still pursued me and called me back to relationship with him. Remember God’s kindness today and praise him for how he has been kind to you.

Praising God from A to Z - Day 10

Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him.  Isaiah 30:18
God is a God of justice. He is perfectly able to discern between right and wrong, good and evil. Because of this, we are all subject to his judgement. This does not sound like something to be grateful for but when you take into account the perfect sacrifice of his son Jesus to take our place and our rightful judgment, it is absolutely something to be grateful for!! It is because of God’s justice that we have been given the choice to accept this gift of salvation. Once we accept and believe, we are part of the family of God and no longer under condemnation. We are however called to be people who act justly (Micah 6:8). We are not called to judge others in the way that God does, but he wants us to be people that treat others fairly, even when they do not do the same to us. Since God is a just God, we can also know that all evil in the world will ultimately be dealt with by him. Remember today what God has done by sending his son to pay the price for your sins and thank him for his justice!

Praising God from A to Z - Day 9

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.  1 Corinthians 6:19-20
When you accept Christ as your Saviour, you also invite the Holy Spirit into your life. He is indwelling you, helping and guiding you from the time of salvation (Ephesians 1:13-14). The Holy Spirit can sometimes be tossed aside or not addressed because it can get confusing to know how to explain who He is and what His role is in our lives. But we cannot forget about this important part of the trinity! The Holy Spirit is meant to be our counselor, giving us reminders of God’s Word and pointing us to the truth. Praise God today that He is indwelling!

Praising God from A to Z - Day 8

Who among the gods is like you, Lord? Who is like you-majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders? Exodus 15:11
God’s holiness sets him apart from all of creation. He is perfect and without blemish or sin. All he does is perfect and right and true. His holiness should cause us to worship him. Psalm 29:2 says, “Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.” Praise him today for his holiness!

Praising God from A to Z - Day 7

Give thanks to the Lord, for he his good; his love endures forever. 1 Chronicles 16:34
Most of us probably have gone through seasons where we doubt the goodness of God, or at least wonder if his goodness actually applies to us. I have good news! His goodness is absolutely for you too! Even when your circumstances may not be good, he is still good. Even in the most difficult of tragedies or disasters, he is still good. His goodness is not reliant on our broken world. In his goodness, he wants to use those difficult things that are a result of the brokenness of the world to draw us closer to him. It doesn’t mean that we won’t feel pain or loss but that he promises to be with us when we do. God is good all the time. All the time, God is good. Thank you God for being our good father!

Praising God from A to Z - Day 6

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. Deuteronomy 7:9
God faithful to always keep his promises! Because of his nature, he cannot lie or break his promises. His Word is True and there are countless accounts of covenants he has kept with His people. But those promises were not just available during the time of the BIble accounts, His promises are for you today... He promises to fight for you! (Deut. 14:14, Isaiah 54:17, 2 Thessalonians 3:3)

He promises to give you strength! (Isaiah 40:31)

He promises to be with you and deliver you from your fear! ( Isaiah 41:10. Joshua 1:9, Psalm 34:4)

He promises to be your guide! (Proverbs 3:5-6)

He promises to give you all you need! (Philippians 4:19)

He promises freedom! (John 8:36)

He promises wisdom for those who ask! (James 1:5)

He promises to bring comfort! (Psalm 23:4)

He promises forgiveness! (Psalm 86:5, 1 John 1:9)

He promises to love you unconditionally! (Romans 8:38-39)

He promises salvation and eternal life to those who believe! (John 3:16, Romans 6:23)

Those are just a short sampling of all of his promises available to you! What an amazing gift his faithfulness is! Thank you Lord for being faithful to keep your promises! Praise God today for his faithfulness and thank him for the ways he has shown faithfulness in your own life.

Praising God from A to Z - Day 5

But you, O Lord, are enthroned forever; you are remembered throughout all generations. Psalm 102:12
We praise God that he is eternal because he was and will always be God. He has no beginning and no end. He existed before creation and is the creator of all things. The same God we read about in the Bible is the God who still cares about us today. We cannot fully comprehend what it means for God to be eternal because he exists outside of our finite understanding of time and space, but we can praise him for being eternal because it means that we can trust that he is in control.

Praising God from A to Z - Day 4

I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Psalm 34:4
God is our deliverer!! I love how well the lyrics from the song My Deliverer by @mandisaofficial describe God as our deliverer...
"My deliverer, you rescued me from all that held me captive
My deliverer, you set me free
Now I can live
My deliverer, I'm no longer captive
My deliverer, you gave your life that I might live
So every moment I will give you praise"
God is your deliverer so you don't have to be held down by the chains of this world. You are FREE in Christ because he gave his life for you. Praise him today because he is your deliverer! AMEN

Praising God from A to Z - Day 3

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the Earth. He will not grow tired and weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. Isaiah 40:28
God created everything from nothing. He took care and delight in creating every little detail from the highest star in the sky to each hair on your head. He paints the skies with glorious sunsets and gives us beautiful flowers to enjoy. How can we not see his hand in the beauty of his creation? There are so many intricate details in nature, animals and mankind that make it hard to believe that it was all just random...it all points to our Creator! Take time today to take in the beauty of his creation and give him praise for all he has made.

Praising God from A to Z - Day 2

I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me. Psalm 13:6
Do you ever stop to think of all the blessings the Lord has given you? I know it can be hard sometimes, especially when going through difficult seasons but it is so important to not let all the negative things cloud out all the amazing blessings he has given, is giving now and will give some day. His blessings are bountiful, meaning he doesn't have limited supply. So even if it feels like everyone around you is experiencing the blessing you are praying for, it doesn't mean he has forgotten you or somehow gave away your blessing to someone else. He wants to bless you with an abundant life that is far greater than you can imagine. He is not holding back his love or blessing but preparing you to receive it. Sometimes we need to experience the difficult season in order to learn to lean on him and be even more grateful for his bountiful blessings. But we don't praise him because of what he can give us but because of who he is. Thank him today for being a God who is bountiful.

Praising God from A to Z - Day 1

I started posting these graphics with some reflection on Instagram and my personal Facebook back in September. They are based on the card set Praising God from A to Z by Brave Little Taylor in the Illustrated Faith Print and Pray Shop. I have not been able to be consistent posting everyday but I'm still working through them. I wanted to share the posts here as well so here's day one, Almighty.

Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.
Psalm 147:5

Have you ever stopped to think about how amazing it is that we have a God who is almighty? He has the power to do far more than we could ever imagine. Not only that but he is fighting for you today! Take a moment to thank him for how he has shown his might in your life.

Today the First 15 devotional was about worshipping God. It was timely because a new set called Praising God from A to Z by @bravelittletaylor was also released in the @illustratedfaith Print and Pray shop. I knew I wanted to use these for my Bible journaling but I also decided that I want to share a new graphic for each one as a way to focus on praising HIM as we move into the Fall season. So I am planning for my daily verse posts for the next month or so to be based on the prompts from this card set. I will still plan to use them in my physical journaling but this is a fun way to journal them through digital art as well.

Introduction to Bible Journaling - Part 1 - My Story

I recently had the privilege of  speaking about Bible journaling in front of over 100 women at my church women's retreat. Since I couldn't take you all with me on the retreat, I want to share some of what I talked about here. The first part of my presentation was my story of how I started Bible journaling so that is what I am going to cover in this first post. Part two will be the practical ways of how you can do Bible journaling, both inside of a Bible and outside of a Bible.

Before I get into my story though, I wanted to give you a brief overview of Bible journaling just in case you are wondering what it is. If you were to look up Bible journaling online you would likely find images with artwork in the margins of a Bible. However, Bible journaling is more than creating art in a Bible. Simply put, it's studying God's Word in a creative way. This CAN be done in a Bible but there are many ways to do Bible journaling. All you need to get started is a writing utensil and a piece of paper.

Before I started Bible journaling, I battled a season of depression. I had lost all of my joy or desire to connect with God. It felt like I had tried for so long to keep it all together that God must have forgotten about me. Of course I now know that my trying was in my own strength which is why I was getting nowhere.

After going through counseling, I felt like I was in a much better place with plenty of tools to help me live a much happier and healthier life. But it still felt like something was missing. I had more of a desire to be in the Word but it still felt like a battle to keep up with it. I had long struggled with thinking that Bible study had to be done a certain way. The trouble was that this way was not enjoyable for me and I was not motivated to stick with it.

When I first discovered Bible journaling, I found many of those gorgeous paintings on the pages of Bibles. I was intrigued but also intimidated. I am a creative person but I don't consider myself artistic in the sense that I can paint beautiful pictures or draw elaborate hand lettered words. For a while I was more of an on-looker but deep down I knew it was something I needed to try.

So I got a journaling bible! However, it sat on the shelf for several months before I finally dove in. I'll never forget that first entry because it opened up a whole new world to me, one that quite literally changed my life! My first few entries were simple, just a few embellishments with some notes but it allowed me to connect my faith with my creativity in a way I had not known was possible.

It was only days after I completed my first entry that my husband was let go from his job. We've been through several seasons of unemployment in the past where I was prone to a lot of anxiety. This time however, I felt an unnatural sense of peace that I knew was from God because of my recent time in the Word. I used that time during his unemployment to pour my heart out to God through several entries in my Bible. From then on I knew that Bible journaling was a special tool and something that I could use to connect with God on a deeper more personal level than I had ever experienced before.

This past year especially has been one of tremendous growth for me, even as I’ve dealt with a long season of infertility and other challenges. But God has been faithful to continue to draw me closer to him. Some days are still hard but I am learning to lean more on him everyday. Suffice it to say, I am not the person I was a year ago and I know Bible journaling had a large role to play in that transformation. I love to study the Word and I have a much deeper relationship with God as a result. Bible study is no longer boring but something I can't wait to do because it's fun!
